Throwing a summer bash or just hanging out with friends? Try this easy and tasty Lowcountry Lush take on a classic southern pickled shrimp recipe! I know that there are so many reason that I need a go-to appetizer recipe during the summer. Well, there isn’t anything more Lowcountry than shrimp (any way that you serve it), but pickled shrimp is fantastic, tangy, and it even travels well!

A Taste of Tradition and Origins of the Recipe:

Pickled shrimp has roots deeply embedded in Southern culinary tradition. Originally, this dish was a way to preserve shrimp, making it an accessible option even after the fresh catch was no longer available. The pickling process not only extended the shrimp’s shelf life but also infused it with a distinctive flavor profile that’s become a cherished part of Southern cuisine.

The dish’s origins can be traced back to the coastal regions of the South, where shrimp were abundant and preservation methods were crucial. Over time, pickled shrimp evolved from a practical necessity into a festive delicacy, often served at summer gatherings, holidays, and special occasions.

The Lowcountry Lush version of the pickled shrimp recipe is a twist on the classic southern recipe and oh, so good! The classic recipe uses lemon, but I choose to use limes because it is super refreshing and pairs well with fun cocktails.

Ingredients

1 1/2 pounds fresh shrimp

1 white onion

2 limes

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon sugar

2 cloves garlic

1 jar capers

1/2 cup grape seed oil

3/4 cup apple cider vinegar

1 teaspoon fresh thyme

This recipe will take about 15 minutes to prepare, but you will pickle the shrimp in the refrigerator overnight or for about 24 hours! When you have all of the ingredients together, here are the next steps:

  • Steam shrimp until pink, cool, peel, and set aside in large jar that you will use to store ingredients overnight. * Make sure the at the jar has a tight seal or place tight plastic wrap over a bowl.
  • Thinly slice onion and lime; add to shrimp.
  • Mix ingredients 3-7 in bowl and whisk together.
  • Add ingredients to shrimp, onion, and lime mixture; cover tightly and allow to rest in refrigerator for 24 hours.
  • Serve with crackers, crostini, or cocktail picks!

Conclusion

Pickled shrimp is more than just a delicious appetizer; it’s a piece of Southern tradition that brings a touch of elegance and flavor to any occasion. Whether you’re a seasoned cook or a kitchen newbie, this recipe is straightforward and rewarding. So why not give it a try and bring a bit of Southern charm to your next gathering?
